NATIONAL AWARENESS DAYS FOR SCHOOLS IN MARCH

National Awareness Days are a great way of introducing new concepts to the classroom and connecting with other schools around the world.
What’s more, a lot of the hard work is done for you, with many organisations offering free resource packs to order or download.
March 2017
World Book Day
Date: 2nd March
About: This year, World Book Day is celebrating it’s 20th anniversary, and there’s no shortage of of activities to get involved with. The Play & Win page lists a number of competitions to enter in the lead up to the event, including ‘Design A National Book Token,’ and the downloadable resource pack for primary schools provides plenty of inspiration for the big day.
Extras: National Book Tokens will be giving out 15 million £1 book tokens to children across the UK, which can be exchanged for one of ten top-selling children’s books.

International School Meals Day
Date: 9th March
About: International School Meals Day is all about celebrating the wonder of food and raising awareness about healthy eating habits. This year’s theme is Food, Culture and Heritage. Children are encouraged to share stories about their culture and heritage, and the foods associated with them, not only with their classmates but with the rest of the world, using the hashtag #ISMD2017
Extras: The website provides a list of free resources to help schools teach and learn about school meals, health & wellbeing, and nutrition.

British Science Week
Date: 10th March – 19th March
About: British Science Week is a ten-day celebration of the STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and maths. It involves both local events and nationwide activities for schools, communities and institutions across the UK. The BSA highlights video showcases some of the events that took place last year.
Extras: The British Science Association runs an annual poster competition, and this year’s theme is Change. Entrants can win a variety of prizes, including a copy of Roald Dahl’s George’s Marvellous Experiments.
As part of British Science Week, they’ll also be a Programming for Primaries Day, which introduces computer programming skills to primary school children.

International Day of Happiness
Date: 21st March
About: International Day of Happiness is a global campaign organised by the United Nations to get people thinking about the true meaning of being happy. There’s a free downloadable guidebook on their website, which offers ideas and actions for creating happiness and spreading it to others.
Extras: Schools can print and put up posters that represent the Ten Keys to Happier Living and children can get involved using the hashtag #InternationalDayOfHappiness

The Big Pedal
Date: 20th March to 31st March
About: The Big Pedal is the UK’s largest inter-school cycling and scooting challenge, which invites schools to compete for the title of greatest number of pupils, staff and parents cycling or scooting to school. An online schools map places all the schools that are registered onto the event.
Extras: Schools recording a 15% involvement rate will be entered into daily prize draws to win bike and scooter stunt show tickets and equipment and storage for their school.

Red Nose Day
Date: 24th March
About: Red Nose Day is a national fundraising event that helps fund projects to tackle poverty and injustice in the UK and Africa. Schools are encouraged to throw their own fundraising events such as talent shows, non-uniform days and bake sales. Fundraising packs, including resources, stickers and balloons, can be ordered online.
Extras: Children can learn the 2017 Red Nose Day song called ‘Put a Nose on It’ by downloading a lyrics sheet and sheet music or backing track from the online resource library.

World Autism Awareness Week
Date: 27th March to 2nd April
About: World Autism Awareness Week is an international campaign to get as many people as possible to learn about autism. Schools are encouraged to deliver fun and creative lessons about autism, take part in fundraising activities and spread the message. Last year’s goings on can be viewed in the highlights video.
Extras: Schools can get involved by signing up for a free fundraising pack and downloading free teaching resources, available for every level.
