4 Outdoor Activities for Children in Summer
Fun & educational activities to make the most of the great outdoors this summer.
The upcoming summer break offers opportunities for children to get out into nature and make the most of the long warm days. Despite the lovely weather, boredom can still set in at times so we have put together a best-of-the-web list of outdoor activities that are fun, entertaining and educational.
Make a Homemade Bird Feeder
Bird feeders are a super feature in any garden to attract birds throughout the year. The Raising Little Superheroes blog has a how-to guide for making your own simple & fun feeder. All it takes is a few simple ingredients, some string and a cooky cutter.
If the warm weather continues, be sure to add a bird bath to your garden.
Make your own Bug Hotel
Bugs may make your quiver & squirm but they are essential characters in the ecosystem. A bug hotel offers refuge for garden critters to put their many feet up for the night as well as a roof over their heads whilst they hibernate.
Bug hotels can be built out all manner of recycled items. The RHS has a guide for making your hotel out of recycled plastic bottles – meaning you are doing even more to help the environment!
If you want to raise a more concrete establishment you could use bricks or pallets to build a multi-story destination and fill the levels with the materials from the RHS post.
Make an Upcycled Carton Garden
These fun miniature gardens give children the opportunity to grow flowers of their choosing and take care of their own little piece of the garden. These recycled gardens are also perfect for smaller gardens and yards. We found this simple guide on the Hands On We Grow blog.
Chalk Search Activity
This is a really cost-effective and simple activity that should provide ample entertainment whilst being an opportunity to learn. Send the kids out on a hunt for various garden and woodland items from large leaves, to small leave, from purple flowers to yellow flowers. Using chalks make this a flexible activity and nurturestore.co.uk has a number of search suggestions for you.
