May Dates for Your Diary

As we work towards the exams period, here are some alternative activities and topics to bring variety to your lessons in May.

National Share a Story Month 2019

Looking at Travelling Tales

Encourage storytelling in May with the theme of  Looking at Travelling Tales. A great theme to get involved with and lots of opportunities to explore the worlds we find within books.

For more information, competitions and resources, head over to the FCBG website.

Mental Health Awareness Week 2019

13th to 19th May

Hosted by the Mental Health Foundation, the theme for Mental Health Awareness Week 2019 is Body Image – how we think and feel about our bodies.

Body image issues affect us all in a number of different ways. This week is set to highlight how we should change move towards making body image issues a thing of the past. Throughout the week the Mental Health Foundation will be publishing research and practical tools. Be sure to keep an eye on their website and social channels.

Inspired by this awareness week, we have written about how body image is affecting primary school children and what parents and teachers can do to help alleviate their anxieties. Read our blog post [coming soon].

Walk to School Week 2019

20th to 24th May

This year, to celebrate our 90th anniversary, the challenge will get to the heart of walking and how it can benefit the whole community as well as improve individual wellbeing.

There is growing concern about the damage car pollution is doing to the environment; in particular, the immediate environment surrounding primary schools. Use this week and the excellent resources provided by Living Streets to encourage pupils and teachers to walk to school. There are a number of activities for the week in the classroom packs as well as stickers and wallcharts.

Find more information here.

National Children’s Gardening Week 2019

25th May to 2nd June

National Children’s Gardening Week celebrates the fun that gardens hold for kids. Children, parents, grandparents, schools or garden businesses can find ideas for fun garden projects and activities online.

As the weather (hopefully) improves, this is a great opportunity for children to explore the outdoors. There are so many resources and ideas for activities on the children’s gardening week website.
