Formative assessment, summative testing, and scaled scores

Assessments and testing systems in primary schools are subject to a seemingly never-ending cycle of debate.

Here at HeadStart, we are all too aware of the burden created by annual statutory assessments at Key Stages 1 and 2, as well as the continuous demands on teachers to make ongoing pupil progress judgements across all aspects of the National Curriculum.

However, we are also aware of the value of effective and purposeful assessment for learning and progress tracking throughout the academic year.

Our assessment and testing systems for the English and Maths curriculum provide opportunities for both formative assessment and summative testing. Our summative, end-of-term tests provide a vital snapshot of pupil progress at a point in time, thus enabling effective progress tracking during the year.

These tests have been trialled extensively in schools in order to establish scaled (standardised) scores.

Our assessment/testing resources are:

“Just to let you know that the HeadStart Maths Assessment outcomes matched the SATS results almost exactly… Definitely spot on in terms of level and therefore great for gap analysis and intervention.”
